By Sydney Heiden The NFL Draft was held this week end, and some of these players are huge, 6 feet 8 inches weighing 320 pounds. Most of them are in great physical condition, but when they report for spring training they will have to work hard to get into top condition. Here they are, world class professional athletes and they have to spend the first part of spring training getting into shape. Amazing isnt it. It makes me feel better about myself. I am not a professional athlete, but I am in pretty good physical condition. But to get into the necessary to compete at a professional level, I would really have to work hard to get into top physical shape. The amazing thing about a professional sports team (regardless of the sport), when the players show up at training camp, there is a massive support group there to help them. The team brings in doctors, trainers, dieticians, nutritionists, weight training experts, conditioning experts, and a whole support team of assistants to help out. Sure, the team has the money to pay for all of this support and equipment. It is just an investment in the player, to make them better, to be able to perform at a higher level. But what about you? If youre like me, you cannot afford a whole entourage of people giving you support. But as an average person trying to lose weight and get into shape, it is just as important to have a good support group as it is for a professional athlete, maybe more so, they have already been taught the correct methods to get their body into shape and their multi-million dollar paycheck will help motivate them to succeed. A support group doesnt have be large in order to have a huge impact in your physical fitness training. If necessary, it can consist of only one person, that special someone to cheer you on and motivate you to keep on keeping on. It can be your spouse, your best friend, or someone from work who will encourage you to go the extra mile. Or, it can be the staff at the local gymnasium where you work out to help you perform that extra 10 minutes on the treadmill. It is important to develop a support group, because it is so very easy to get discouraged give up somewhere along the way. Your support group will do whatever is necessary to keep you on the pathway to success, and will be a significant factor in losing weight and getting into better physical shape. Remember, just as it is important to get a support group, it is equally important to be a part of someone elses support group. How to Meet More Quality Men

Possible Pitfalls
By Caryl Ehrlich There are as many reasons youve given yourself to eat as there are minutes in a day. Storm clouds do it for me. They trigger a memory from when I lived in Florida and went deep-sea fishing in Key West. When a squall was imminent, wed pull our boat into a nearby atoll and wait out the storm while eating fresh fish sandwiches and drinking cold beer. Sandwiches are finger foods, which I now steer clear of, and I don't drink beer anymore, but the smell of a rainstorm can be a powerful pitfall for me. I dont act on it, but the memory is a tantalizing trigger, nevertheless. A splash of red wine on white pants may not trigger an overeating episode nor will the car not starting, a flat tire, and your cell phone losing a signal at 4:58 p.m. when you must reach someone before 5:00 p.m. But these things have a cumulative effect, and all the mini-annoyances have the potential of becoming maxi-eating responses by the end of the day. You might stumble because you saw your favorite dessert on a restaurant menu. Or a celebration may convert a tentative no to an emphatic yes as soon as you hear a champagne cork pop from a bottle. I could resist anything but temptation, said Oscar Wilde. Consider the reasons youre tempted to eat. Highlight or circle the ones to which you respond. There are many and they are varied. Do you eat because youre hungry? Do you even know what hunger is? Or are you eating because youre lonely, tired, angry, or bored? Think of all the reasons you eat that have nothing to do with hunger. Perhaps you eat because youre up: its your birthday, my birthday, our anniversary, or Groundhogs Day; or because youre down: sad, or grieving. You might eat because its there, or someone else is eating so why not you? Is food easily available in your office, your home? Do you eat in your car? Are you eating because of good news? Bad news? No news? One man said he eats during the news. You might find yourself eating some foods because they came with a restaurant dinner or others because they came free with your airplane ticket or hotel room. Theres bread on the table in a restaurant, peanuts on the plane, chocolates on your pillow, and you think: Ill never pass this way again. To some, food is seen as a reward: Ive been so good all day. I didnt have breakfast. I didnt have lunch. Ill just have this side of beef for dinner. Of course, if youre feeling stuffed, bloated, and not so good about yourself, then overeating is not a reward. It is a punishment. When a young woman used the excuse that she overate prior to going to the ballet, I asked, did you dance? Unless she was dancing on that stage, she ate too much for dinner. She ate more than she was able to burn. For many, food has become a socially acceptable drug. It seems to numb the tensions and stresses of your life. Perhaps you use food to stuff down feelings and thoughts you dont want to feel or think or to escape. Do you eat when youre frustrated, disappointed, or angry? One fellow told me he knocked off a box of cookies and a pint of ice cream when the courts awarded his ex-wife a big divorce settlement. I wanted to know if she had returned the alimony check when she realized he was hurting himself. Although eating doesnt change the outcome of anything but your waistline and self-esteem, you might still be eating to cheer yourself up when youre down. Or not to feel so alone when youre without company. Or to socialize: you dont want to be left out. You might continue eating even though your clothes are too tight and youre huffing and puffing when you walk. That is part of addiction: you continue doing what you do even though there are negative consequences. Perhaps you eat because youre bored or have to fill unstructured time, such as evenings and weekends, or because you experience family, business, money, or peer-group pressure: (Come on. Were all going for pizza and we want you to come.) You dont want to be left out. You might use food to avoid intimacy or sex. Perhaps you use food to avoid nurturing or being nurtured. You are procrastinating: (Ill have lunch first and then work on that report.) You might eat during food preparation and put-away. Perhaps because once you start you cant stop. You might think, what the hell, I blew it anyway. Maybe food is used as a reward because you did something wonderful, or a punishment because you already overate and figure What the hell, it wont make a difference. When you smell the coffee in your office or the popcorn in a movie, or fresh donuts in a bakery, do you queue up? Do you use food as a meal extender? Youre having such a nice time and dont want the evening to end so you order another cup of coffee, a cocktail, a dessert. Youre entertaining guests. There is an abundance of extra food and all those leftovers. Going home to family is tricky for some. You may feel guilty that your family and friends have been cooking since last Thursday, and you have to taste (and comment on) everything that is offered. Does the cook get offended if you dont have seconds and thirds? We eat differently when we are in the company of two people, three people, four people, more people. A recent study said that people who eat with six or more other people consume a whopping 78% more than they would if they ate alone. The more people there are, the more food is offered. The longer food remains on the table, the longer youre tempted to eat. Are you too tired to cook so you pick pick pick and convince yourself you didnt eat anything? A point to remember: If its not water, its food. And this, too: If you swallowed it, you ate it. It all adds up. Whether you overeat because of genetics, ethnicity, religion, circumstance, or emotion doesnt matter. Perhaps you eat for some of these reasons or all of these reasons. Each person gets into the habit of using food inappropriately by eating for reasons you tell yourself its okay to eat, even if youre not hungry. Having followed these habits for such a long time sometimes decades theyve become involuntary conditioned responses. Just as Pavlovs dogs, when a stimulus appears, can a yes, thank you, be far behind? The intelligent you, thinks you shouldnt be doing what youre doing, but you cant stop. Thats the sneaky part of the addiction as if making up your mind will do the trick when it never has before. This might be the moment to make a list of the reasons you eat. Put down the breadstick and get a pencil. After seeing my list, a middle-aged woman said to me, According to your program, I havent been hungry since 1963. She was correct. She and you may have misidentified these situations, circumstances, and emotions as hunger for such a long time, youve lost your innate ability to identify this most basic of feelings. If youre trying to satisfy a physical hunger, your body doesnt require a great deal of food. If youre trying to fill an emotional hunger, you could back up a truck full of food to your home or office, and it would never, ever, contain enough food. Okay guys, put the Mallomars in the cabinet, the Hagen-Dazs in the freezer. The Twinkerdoodles go on the bed. If you become so overwhelmed, confused and paralyzed with not knowing what to do about this multi-faceted, many-layered topic of weight control that you cant stop eating once you start, chances are you do nothing. If hungry, you need to nourish the body. If, along the way, it also tastes good, looks good, and smells good, youve got a bonus. But you shouldnt be eating because it looks, smells, and tastes good. Almost everything fits that criteria. If youre thirsty, drink water. If youre responding to one of the above stimuli, change habits by creating new and constructive responses to replace your old and destructive ones. This is called repatterning. I might have missed one of your Possible Pitfalls, but you get the idea. Add yours if its not here. Observe how you eat when youre up or down, alone or with friends. We even eat differently with men, differently with women, and another way with children. These pitfalls might be because of emotions, circumstances, or just because its there or youre there, in the neighborhood where your favorite something is prepared as nowhere else in the world! Pitfalls can be any of these things or all of these things. None of the Pitfalls Ive described above are hunger. And if its not hunger, its not a reason to eat. What are your Possible Pitfalls? Guidelines for Healthy Eating
By Wayne Mcgregor Everyday, we encounter a huge array of food options. A small corner store often has hundreds of different drinks to choose from; grocery stores present us with endless, exhausting aisles of options; menus, even in small restaurants, can be several pages in length. On top of all this, we are constantly hit with a barrage of information about food: advertising convincing us that we should give in to every craving, diet gurus trying to get us on to the latest trend, health experts warning us about todays big food scare. With so many options, and so many conflicting sources of information, it is hard to figure out exactly what eating healthy is, and its even harder to avoid overeating. However, there are a few basic pieces of information we can arm ourselves with that will go a long way towards allowing us to cut through the overdose of choices and advertising claims, and enter into a lifetime of healthy eating habits. The Golden Rule of Healthy Eating If there were a pyramid of keys to eating healthy, the stone at the very top of that pyramid would be MODERATION. Eating everything in moderation is absolutely essential to good health, and ignoring or overlooking this simple fact often leads to obesity and other health problems. How to Moderate One of the main reasons we tend to overeat is that we dont pay attention to what we are eating, and we dont pay attention to our bodies when they tell us that weve had enough. Always eat CONSCIOUSLY, and SLOWLY. In this way, we become aware of how much we have consumed, and we know when weve had enough. Avoid taking second helpings at meals, ordering the largest sized item on the menu at restaurants, and snacking directly out of the bag of chips or box of cookies so that you dont know how much youre eating until its all gone. Portion Sizes A great way to become aware of what we are eating is to understand portion sizes. Most of the time, we eat three or four times the amount recommended on food labels. Below, you will find a rough guide to healthy portion sizes:
A portion of meat or protein is 3 oz., roughly the size of a deck of cards. We should be eating no more than 2-3 portions a day. Ideally, these should come from lean meats like chicken or fish, or from non-animal proteins, like legumes.
A portion of dairy is equivalent to 1 cup of milk, or 1.5 oz. of cheese - roughly the size of a golf ball. We should be eating no more than 2-3 portions a day.
A portion of fruit or vegetables is about equivalent to the size of one medium apple or orange, or a cup of vegetables. We should be eating 5-10 portions a day. However, fruit is high is sugar and should be consumed more moderately than vegetables. While 3-5 servings of fruit a day is PLENTY, we can easily enjoy 6-8 servings of veggies without compromising weight loss goals.
Food guides tend to recommend 5-12 servings of grain products a day. This may seem like a lot, however, a serving size is equal to only a cup of cook rice or pasta, 1 slice of bread, or a bagel or scone.
With portions like that, its easy to see how those carb calories pile up fast! Just dont forget that a healthy diet does require some carbohydrates. The problem with carbs is that they are usually full of sugar, and are highly addictive. Maintaining a healthy carb intake may be the biggest dietary challenge for many people, but remember: moderation is key, listen to your body, and stay in control! Timing is Everything Another key to eating moderately is to control WHEN we eat. We now know that people are much better off eating 5 or 6 small meals a day. When you eat a large meal, your body cant handle all the nutrition that is being taken in, thus much of it gets converted into fat and goes to waste. However, if you eat several small meals a day, your body will process the same amount of food more efficiently, resulting in healthy, natural weight loss. It is also important not to eat before bed. Although late night snacking is tempting, it is one of the worst things you can do for your weight and your health. Try not to eat 3-4 hours before you go to bed, because anything you do eat will just get stored as fat while your body snoozes. Enjoy the pleasure of waking up hungry in the morning and eating a good breakfast. Never skip breakfast! This will just make you feel rotten, and more likely to pig out later in the day. The final key that locks the door against overeating forever is to avoid starving yourself. Once you get really hungry, your next meal will almost inevitably be a large, fatty one. By eating moderately and consistently throughout the day, you will actually eat less, your body will process food more efficiently, and you will lose weight without feeling hungry and miserable. Wait For The Butter And Miss The Bread
By John Dir The core values of people who grow up in larger families are influenced by factors that often go unnoticed by society. When my wife offers bread or rolls for dinner, she cannot understand why I do not take time to put something like butter on it. This situation goes right to the core of the illustration. When we were growing up as a family, dinner time was a very strategic moment in daily history. Without discussion, each child at the table knew what plan to execute, and each one performed the same ritual at every meal. As we all gathered around the table, there would invariably be certain foods that were highly desirable, and others that we knew we would have to fill the rest of our plates with, once the good stuff was gone. The interlude which preceded the blessing of our meal was the perfect time to mentally prepare ourselves for the first target we intended to grab. Each of us pictured the angle of attack, the speed of the snatch, the physical distance from our seating location, and the potential contingency plans in the event of a competitor reaching for the same item. In addition to these factors, there was also the influence of who would be chosen to speak the blessing, and how long the interval would be until the "Amen" set the contest into motion. On a few ill planned occasions, somebody would try to obtain an unfair advantage by hovering one hand over a particularly delectable item, thinking the safety of bowed heads and closed eyes would protect them from scrutiny. However, there were too many of us willing to peek and cry foul to allow such tactics to go unnoticed. A slapped hand might throw off the coordination needed for a perfect execution, so on most occasions, we learned to keep our hands ready, but out of sight. For those who tried playing mind games by strategically creating an inordinate pause before the "Amen," we learned quickly that this was only cause for creating a virtual "Amen," which did nothing to delay the start. As our parents attempted to instill appropriate table manners, they learned how quickly a child can get a piece of food and take a bite out of it, before the niceties of passing dishes around the table can begin. As we all grew more skilled in the protocol of family dinners, the basic understanding became clear that one might be able to get hold of one or two choice food items before order overcame the chaos. One certainty was that if a participant waited for the butter, they might miss out on the bread. Chicken dinners became a sore spot for the family at one point in time. Chickens only have two beast portions, and with four people who preferred breast meat, the conflict over the lucky grab created a problem until my mother resolved the issue by buying all breasts instead of whole chickens for dinner. These early lessons prepared a pattern for life that still carries over in some aspects today. Though our manners and protocols at meals have greatly improved as adults, there are still the subliminal impulses that tell me that if I wait for the butter, I might miss out on the bread. Sacred Love - Never Go Back
By Christopher Walker A sacred relationship takes two. Sometimes one or both people, are just not ready. To move into a sacred relationship, the individual you choose must be ready. If they are desperate, they say, Got to this and Got to that, and they are not ready. If they are always saying, You should be like this, or You should be like that then they are not ready. If they are always saying, I want and I need this from you, then they are not ready. And finally, if your lover says, I love you, and waits for an answer, like I love you too, beware, that is just a got to in disguise. This includes their lifestyle. Many people are not healed from their ex so they will say to you, He or she, hasnt let go, but that is the victim speaking. They havent let go. Your lover might say, I maintain a relationship with my ex-partners and that is who I am, then they are not ready for sacred love. You must be the focus, and ex lovers must get to know a new we. Relationship demands letting go of those things we are attached to and grabbing hold of our lover. Holding the past, and demanding that it comes into the future, sabotages love. For the vast majority of people healing the past, turning up happy and ready for love is a slow and deliberate process. You need to be respectful that you are not demanding something from your lover, that they promise with all their heart to do, but just cannot. If you are not discerning, then you may find yourself feeling betrayed. They may make promises to love you and be your sacred lover, but they are still fighting to heal the past. Then your heart will break over and over. That person who thinks they are healed, but has not healed, will be unable to meet you in love. They will accidentally betray you, because they simply cannot show up. Never go back The word never is a very low consciousness term. So the heading of this advice is more provocative than it needs to be. However, it is sound advice. It would make breaking up so much easier, moving on so much clearer, and the healing process so much more thorough if we could all listen to this ancient advice. Never go back. Because everything looks good from a distance. But the issues that caused the break up will still be there, the person who hurt you will hurt you again, and really, unless you are prepared to do honest healing, it advice is sound. Then we can add unless. Unless you are prepared to really invest in healing. Healing in this case means. 1/ You acknowledge that it was your behavior alone that caused the breakup. 2/ That you do to others what your ex-partner did to you. 3/ That what you dont appreciate you lose. 4/ That nobody does to you more than you do to yourself. 5/ That love is not a prison, and if you are filled with stress, feeling unromantic and distracted, someone else steps in to fill the void. 6/ That healing means unconditionally thanking your lover for the pain, the growth, and the love you now feel for them. Self Respect Self- respect is an essential ingredient if you are to give love to yourself, and most importantly, to others. You cannot give what you havent got. True Love begins and ends with true love for yourself. Therefore, you must know yourself, learn to think for yourself, look after yourself, wait on yourself, and to act on your own intuitions. This is a crucial part of the development of self-respect. Self-respect is the stepping stone to self love. This is not an isolation or withdrawal, but the ability to trust your own convictions amongst the questions and turbulence of life. A flexibility must arise in you where there is no need to go into defense. To achieve this youll need to rise above your Ego, and the most accurate measure of that aim is to arrange your life so that mental disturbance does not become a hindrance. Adhere to the laws of balance in all your mental activity. Expectations are the egos hands and the cause of all disturbances. Expectations breed suffering. If you can be a person whose expectations become the most flexible part of their world, then you can live in the highest order. Be discerning You can be tempted to take your emotional problems to an idyllic setting, where people come and feed you well, exercise you well and do these self exploration exercises like jumping off poles and flying on ropes. They also provide daily workshops where your personal issues are processed. When I observe the results of most of those programs I notice that they rarely teach people how to love their partner, (and therefore grow) but more focus on how to solve their problems, more like blaming their partners. The programs legitimized the stories of the attendees, so the healing is all temporary. Beware of teachers. Beware of teachers. Beware of teachers. Be discerning. It doesnt matter if someone has a yoga certificate or like me, wrote a book or two - never put people on pedestals. The industry is not regulated. the qualifications and training are spurious, and the teachers themselves are often deeply in their own emotional drama. Beware of becoming the problem solver When you fall in love, there is no condition for it, you simply fell. But then there may be a question regarding the emotional circumstances your partner has in their life, and whether they can create a loving relationship. Remember, that you are never a prophet in your own home. If you cannot accept and love your partner within the emotional drama they have created for themselves, or if they are too stressed to turn up for your love (and therefore want to be rescued all the time) then, it is wise to acknowledge, that you are not going to be the catalyst for change in their life. Kabbalah: In Search of the Revelations of Elijah
By Gersiane De Brito Salon is a small town in the south of France. It was a quiet place in the sixteenth century, an unlikely place for the discovery that ancient revelations were not what for centuries they had been believed to be: a blueprint for the creation of the world, the primordial world of angels and spirits that preceded creation of the lower world. They finally realized that the prophetic revelations applied to our world, that these revelations were relentlessly coming true, and that their fulfillment may be unstoppable. A dire future was awaiting humankind. Salon. An unlikely place for efforts to defy divine will and change the course of history. Before I go any further, I would like to inform my readers that this article is based on theory and conjecture. It is a story of events that occurred hundreds of years ago, and those events were a secret in their own day. My information comes from an interview with cryptic book author Morten St. George, who spent years scrutinizing cabalistic texts looking for clues on the history of the Revelations of Elijah. Still, I repeat that this article is based on theory and conjecture. According to St. George, the master plot of Nostradamus and his colleagues was to completely destroy the Revelations of Elijah. Destroyed prophecies cannot come true, can they? In case they can, Nostradamus created a backup plan to toss a wild card into the laws of cause and effect. There were one hundred revelations in total. They would openly publish forty-two of the less offensive ones, allowing the world to act upon them, steering the course of history far away from the fifty-eight holocaust prophecies that would remain forever burnt into ashes. An intriguing scheme indeed. To protect the forty-two revelations on their journey into the future, to ensure that they evade condemnation by the Inquisition and that they survive until the appropriate time, Nostradamus masked the forty-two revelations, surrounding them with nine hundred new revelations of his own creation. St. George says the masking job was brilliant, making the real revelations almost indistinguishable from the false ones. For example, revelation IV-33 names Jupiter, Venus, Moon, Neptune, and Mars. Stanza IV-28 refers to Venus, the Sun, and Mercury; IV-29 refers to the Sun, an eclipse, and Mercury; IV-30 refers to the Sun and the Moon; IV-31 refers to the Moon. "To the untrained eye, it all looks like the same nonsense. Likewise throughout Nostradamus' book. You will never spot the real revelations just by glancing at the stanzas." I asked St. George how he found the forty-two revelations of Elijah hidden inside Nostradamus' book. He replied that Nostradamus' Epistle leads the way to most of them. The Epistle was a prose piece that Nostradamus inserted in front of the last three hundred stanzas. St. George claims that it is a cryptic masterpiece of almost unfathomable genius, where nearly every phrase points to one of the real revelations. St. George allowed me to derive a few examples from his book, beginning with Revelation X-79, which refers to the city of Memphis (site of Martin Luther King's assassination) and to Mercury (here employed as the Greek god of merchants). ***Nostradamus writes: "And from the time he went into Egypt until he came out, 130 years went by; and from the time that Jacob went into Egypt until his posterity came out, 430 years went by." The old Memphis, no longer extant in Nostradamus' day, was the capital of ancient Egypt, thereby setting an anchor in revelation X-79. 1079 less 130 leads to revelation IX-49 (British history); 1079 less 430 leads to revelation VI-49 (assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II). ***Nostradamus writes: "Mercury from the 3rd of February until the 24th of the same; afterwards from the 1st of June until the 24th of the same." "Mercury" sets another anchor on X-79 and "the same" clearly means the same group of one hundred stanzas, here the tenth Century. 1079 plus 21 (24 minus 3) leads to revelation X-100 (British Empire); then, afterwards (reverse direction), 1079 less 23 (24 minus 1) leads to revelation X-56 (royal wedding and Ronald Reagan assassination attempt). The cryptic Epistle is far from all mathematical in its ciphers. For example, Nostradamus mentions "the conspiracy of the conspirators with the second Thrasibulus." Thrasibulus was a Greek patriot who liberated Athens from the Thirty Tyrants, producing a clear pointer to revelation IV-89, which begins "Thirty of London in secret shall conspire." St. George says the art of cryptic writing began in cabalistic circles centuries before the time of Nostradamus and that he found it employed by many medieval authors. This art, according to St. George, was a derivative of the Revelations of Elijah: "Who knows how many hours they spent studying those revelations, all day long, day after day, year after year, century after century. Though they could never arrive at a correct understanding of the revelations, amazingly, they managed to learn and adopt many of the cryptic techniques deployed by those revelations." I asked St. George if Elijah the prophet was the originator of cryptic writing. He responded he has no evidence that they believed Elijah wrote the revelations. St. George surmises that the name comes from biblical considerations. Elijah ascended to the sky in a chariot, and his return to Earth was promised: "I shall send you Elijah the prophet." Thus, according to St. George, centuries later, when a chariot descended to deliver the revelations, they had to assume it was Elijah's return. Then, who did they believe wrote the Revelations of Elijah? St. George responded they believed the revelations were of divine origin, written in heaven on white matter from the primordial universe, adding "at one point, they attributed physical authorship to the heavenly scribe, an angel by the name of Metatron." The conversation here turned to another area. In sharp contrast with the book of creation Sefer Yetzirah (according to St. George, co-delivered by the chariot), a book written in and praising the Hebrew language, St. George claims that the Revelations of Elijah were written in Latin. Again he says there is biblical support, something about a language of the west that they shall not understand. He says it helps explain how the guardians of revelations were able to keep them a secret for so many centuries. Despite the absurdity of it all, St. George is unyielding about the Revelations of Elijah being written in Latin: "Nostradamus' word by word translation into French maintains Latin syntax. Besides, if they gave the heavenly scribe a Latin-based name, it is only logical to conclude that this angel also wrote in Latin." As for cryptic writing, St. George claims that Nostradamus was the greatest master of all the cabalists. He says it is only fitting for the last cabalist. I asked him why he referred to Nostradamus as the last cabalist. St. George replied: "They say the word "Kabbalah" means "tradition" or "receiving." "Receiving" sounds correct to me. The chariot descended to deliver the revelations, and they "received" them. Like the Book of Light, the Black Fire over White Fire, the Heavenly Book, the Works of the Chariot, the Presence of the Exile, etcetera, I see "Kabbalah" as another term for the Revelations of Elijah. Since Nostradamus was the last guardian of the Kabbalah, to my thinking he was the last cabalist." Back to School Confidential for Teens
By Jessica Setnick Back to school can be a tricky time for lots of reasons, especially if you have changed over the summer. You and your friends may look different in the fall than you did when you left school in May. You may be darker from spending time outside or have braids from your trip to the beach, you may be stronger from your summer job or wilderness camp, you may have a new hair cut or new clothes. If you had a growth spurt over the summer, you may be a different size or shape.
It can be stressful to wonder what others will think of your new look, especially if you are already self-conscious or you hang with a group that tends to judge peoples looks. Hopefully your friends are your friends because you like each other, have fun together, support each other, and feel good about yourself when you're with them. Even if you havent changed at all, or you feel like the only one who is worried about what others will think of your new look, the truth is, everyone wants to be liked and accepted.
When you see your friends for the first time after the summer, maybe you could say things like, I am SO glad to see you! and give them a hug or a high-five, instead of saying how good they look. Grown-ups comment on each others looks (especially weight) all the time, but its not a very grown-up thing to do. The Israelite army was to march around the heavily fortified city of Jericho seven times and shout on the final pass. Determined to show no apprehension for God's request, Joshua walked back towards the encampment and was met by a man. Joshua 5: 13-15, "While Joshua was near Jericho, he suddenly saw a man standing in front of him, holding a sword. Joshua went up to him and asked, 'Are you one of our soldiers, or an enemy?' 'Neither,' the man answered. 'I am here as the commander of the Lord's army.' Joshua threw himself on the ground in worship and said, 'I am your servant, sir. What do you want me to do?' And the commander of the Lord's army told him, 'Take your sandals off; you are standing on holy ground.' And Joshua did as he was told." Joshua had to see the Spirit world that is hidden from the people of the world. He had to understand how the unseen world and our world co-exist for the purpose of helping human beings who were on the side of God. This knowledge would give him the ability to be strong and determined so he could trust and obey God as he began the awesome task of conquering the Promised Land. An explosion sounded in a tremendous thunder scattering the rock walls of the city into tiny bits. It devastated every armory position, every watch tower, and the heavy gates that once protected Jericho. In one quick attack the army ran towards the city. They destroyed every living, breathing, thing and ignited the city in fire. Every idol and image of their idols had to be destroyed. Every part of Jericho had to be annihilated so that the Israelites would not be tempted and pulled into their evil lifestyle. God had to separate the Israelites from evil so they could be a living example to all nations of how to be good in an evil world where Satan is king. The Israelites needed to be the messengers for the foundation of the Laws of Moses that would begin in Israel and spread throughout the entire world. The surrounding nations needed their illustration so they would turn away from their former practices and follow the powerfully, miracle working God of Israel. A God who was a God of order. A God who would bring in a government of justice. A God who would use any means necessary to grab people from evil and instruct them in truth. God revealed His greatness when He took the sinful nation of Israel and turned them into Law abiding, obedient servants who would even die in order to get God's message out. People who would face the evil of this world and conquer it by the knowledge given to them by God. Joshua was given a vision of the supernatural world of spirits so he could see the commander of the unseen army of God. Seeing this world brought him to his knees in fear. Suddenly he realized that there was more to this world. An unseen world of spirits that co-exist along side of man. Ephesians 6: 11-13, "Put on all the armor that God gives you, so that you will be able to stand up against the Devil's evil tricks. For we are not fighting against human beings but against the wicked spiritual forces in the heavenly world, the rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers of this dark age. So put on God's armor now! Then when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist the enemy's attacks; and after fighting to the end, you will still hold your ground." Joshua realized that he was not fighting against human beings, he was fighting against the wicked spiritual forces of the unseen world. Spirits who could influence the mind of men for good or evil. A heavenly world of rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers who wanted to destroy the lives of men. The hardest thing I ever did was to completely commit my ways to the supernatural messages God typed to me. His messages became my thoughts and opened up my mind to think and act differently towards the conflicts that surrounded the lives of men. My trials over the custody of my three children put each message into an illustration of how God uses people to fight against the wicked spiritual forces of the unseen world. Forces that use the word of God for evil. Spirits that influence even church people to fight against the very nature of God. 1John 3:10, "Here is the clear difference between God's children and the Devil's children: anyone who does not do what is right or does not love his brother is not God's child." An unseen spiritual world of good was beckoning me to see my world in an entirely different perspective. A world where we are chosen to do battle against evil in our human form. A plan set forth by the living God to rally the human troops against the wicked spiritual forces of evil for the side of love. A world where we are God's heroes battling forces of evil that can't be seen, but are present in the very heart of men. Men who listen to evil and are determined to fight against anyone who is on the side of love. The courtroom was filled with members of my ex-church. I walked in on crutches determined to fight against the persecutions they were waging against me for loving Tori. Two weeks before my former church pastor and a deacon watched as my ex-husband slammed a car door into my leg over and over again and did nothing to stop him. God sent me a message telling me to let the people who were not members of this church know just exactly what kind of leadership was teaching their kids. I obeyed and anonymously sent letters off to every parent whose kids were in the Wednesday children's program. The crowd of Southern Baptist members were there to show there support to Eric and their pastor. They wanted to intimidate me and make me see that my being gay gave them the right to do anything they wanted against me. That morning I had received another message from God telling me to not go forward in court. He stated that they were only going to make it about me being gay and it could lead to them trying to hurt me even more. He said we had made our point when we sent letters to the parents. When my lawyer arrived, he looked at the crowd in the courthouse room in bewilderment. He agreed with me that we should let go of the protective order. He looked at Tori and I and understood that this was not about abuse it was about love. 1John 4: 7&8, "Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Whoever loves is a child of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love." It was years later before I began to understand why these things happened to me. I was part of a bigger plan! My life would be an example for anyone who was willing to see that we are more than human beings trying to live the American Dream. The History of Reiki
By Peter Tremayne The history of Reiki is a fascinating and thought provoking subject in itself. To understand Reiki you must surely first learn and understand the history of Reiki. Reiki was first created in the 20th century by Mikao Usui, who was a Tendai Buddhist. He spent a large amount of time meditating and fasting, and it was during these activities that he discovered Reiki. He wrote that he had learned of the practice through a mystical experience. The knowledge that he gained would allow him to harness and apply the powers that are attributed to Reiki. By using initiations, he would be able to help people gain access to energy. When patients participate in these initiations, they may become a more powerful channel for the energy, and this can help them receive better treatments. Some of the ideas for Reiki are quite similar to the concept of "qi." Usui also studies subjects such as Yoga, Ayurveda, and classic Chinese medicines. Mikao Usui would go on to train a number of students, who went on to become his disciples. One of his most prominent disciples was Chujiro Hayashi, who went on to teach and spread the Reiki techniques. The variation that he taught was much more simple than the techniques that had been promoted by Mikao Usui. It was Hayashi who first developed a collection of specific hand positions. This was a sharp contrast to Usui, who preferred more mystical methods for treatment. Hayashi trained Hawayo Takata, and she would go on to introduce the practice in the United States. While she claimed to be a Grandmaster, the term is not used in Japan. As the practice of Reiki spread throughout the world, the practice became split into two categories, and these are independent school and traditional school. The traditional schools were devoted to teaching Reiki in the same manner that it was taught by the founder Mikao Usui. In contrast, the independent schools teach Reiki in a way that differs greatly from that which was used by Usui. Ironically, Reiki is rare in Japan, the country from which it originated. It is much more popular in the West, and has become popular in a number of hospitals. One notable example of Reiki being used by the healthcare industry is the National Health Service in the United Kingdom. In recent years, a number of changes have occurred with Reiki schools. Many of them are now moving towards independent forms that can allow the treatment to be more widely available to a larger segment of the population. Some have even begun merging Reiki with a number of New Age practices or beliefs such as channeling and Wicca. A number of symbols and new procedures have been added. The vast majority of changes that have been made in Reiki are a result of the harm that adherents believe Hawayo Takata brought to the practice. While her methods were strict, the methods that are used for Reiki today are much more loose. One element that some schools have added to the practice of Reiki is called Seichim energy, and will alter the experience and practice of channeling. The independent Reiki movement has made it popular with a larger segment of the population. Kid Party Stuff - Ten Easy Steps to Keeping Your Child Happy at a Grown-up Party
By Patricia Jensen Plan Ahead: 1. Parents should discuss and agree who is responsible for getting the child settled in to their new surroundings upon arrival at the party. Also, discuss a time frame that each one will spend looking after the child so both have the opportunity to enjoy the party without interruption. For example, one parent takes a turn spending hour with the child, then the other parent takes over. This time arrangement is a realistic and workable solution for many parents. 2. If an older child of babysitting age is available, you may arrange to have her take care of your child during the party so both parents are free to relax and enjoy. 3. Discuss in advance with your child what will be expected of her at the party. Issues such as where the child will be and where the parents will be should be covered, as well as what time the child will be expected to go to bed if thats part of the arrangement. Stress the fun she will have and how proud you will be if s/he behaves "like a big kid". Keep it lighthearted and accentuate the positive. 4. If possible, arrange play time with a child or children of another party guest, preferably those with whom your child has a history of cooperative play. Selecting A Weight Loss Program - The IRS, Your Weight, & You
By Alan Wayler In April of 2002 the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officially recognized obesity as a disease, making it far easier for American taxpayers to trim their tax bills and waistlines at the same time. The step is an important one, not so much because of savings to taxpayers (the deduction really has only limited value), but more because it marks a shift in government point of view. Whether it's due to unhealthy lifestyles that lead to obesity, or to the obesity itself, overfat people suffer greater risk for disorders such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Excess body fat is also strongly linked to depression and poor self-esteem. One recent study suggested that obesity exacts an even higher toll on health than smoking or drinking and raises an individual's lifetime health care costs by a whopping 36%. Clearly, reversing the rising tide of obesity is important. A potential tax break offers a kind of official recognition that's encouraging. After all, it's estimated that the total cost of overweight/obesity in the U.S. approaches $100 billion annually, with about half of that spent in preventive, diagnostic and treatment services. What's Covered and What's Not Deducting weight loss expenses from taxes isn't new for Americans. But in the past, we could do it only if weight loss was undertaken at a physician's direction to treat other diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease. The difference now: The IRS recognizes obesity itself as a disease worth treating. Thus, American taxpayers may deduct the cost of weight loss programs without having to show that the weight loss was undertaken to treat another disease. An individual who has been diagnosed as obese by a physician may deduct the cost of "diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention," according to the IRS. Weight loss programs, behavioral counseling, pharmaceuticals and surgery all qualify with one caveat. As always, medical expenses of any kind are deductible only after they exceed 7.5% of the taxpayer's adjusted gross income and if they are not reimbursed by insurance. If you meet that criteria for 1999 or 2000 (and 1998 if you have an extension to file), you can amend those returns. On the other hand, weight loss expenses for cosmetic reasons or general good health are not deductible nor are personal trainers, health club memberships or diet- related foods. Bottom line: The new IRS rules are most likely to benefit only those who have a sizeable amount of other unreimbursed medical expenses that can piggyback onto weight loss expenses to bring total deductions above 7.5% of adjusted gross income. Not Just Weight Loss While we at Green Mountain are happy to see the government taking steps to support individuals' efforts to take charge of their health, we know it's just a beginning. The next steps need to go further to identify standards for treatment. A weight loss program should have documented that it works before it could qualify as a deductible expense. (See sidebar "Choosing a Weight Loss Program.) In case that ever happens, we want to state it loud and clear now: When it comes to measuring success, a smaller body size may not always be part of the picture. And if it is, it still may not be the most important part. What counts most is not whether a body qualifies as obese on a weight chart, or whether a person reaches "ideal" weight (whatever that is). Instead, what counts is whether that body, whatever its size, is generally considered healthy in terms of physical and emotional well-being, and supports its inhabitant in her life aims. Still, the new IRS regulations are a start. And if they can help women along the path to health, fitness and increased self-esteem, we say good. It's about time. And certainly, most of us will take all the help with our taxes we can get! Choosing a Weight Loss Program Obviously, we at Green Mountain encourage you to choose non-diet approaches that don't focus on weight loss per se, but instead help you build your physical and mental strength to make choices that are in your best interests. Ask these questions about any weight loss program you consider. Does the program focus on weight loss as an end in itself, or is weight loss recognized as only a part of achieving health and wellness for some people? If weight loss is the ultimate goal, we can get easily sidetracked with quick schemes that may lead to quick weight loss. Unfortunately, the weight regain is often even faster. Is the food and eating advice restrictive? When choice is absent, deprivation often takes us in the opposite direction than desired. It's a set-up for overeating at some point. Look for programs that help you build your internal ability to choose foods that support well-being, and your internal ability to decide how much you need. Think twice about any advice that recommends you avoid specific types of foods, especially major food groups. If you follow it, you might set up cravings that lead to overeating. Is enjoyable physical activity an integral part of the program? Research shows that physical activity is one of the key factors in helping people keep lost weight off. And after all, why go to all the trouble to lose it if you're just going to gain it back again? Been there, done thattime for a different approach. Is there any peer-reviewed, published research that measures the program's effectiveness? In the weight loss field especially, lots of claims abound. But research that shows effectiveness is fairly sparse. Require it. Whose program is it anyway? Check the credentials and experience of the people who have developed and are offering the program. But remember - academic or professional degrees don't always guarantee competence. Thoroughly check out what's being offered, and weigh it against your own experience. If you've been at this long enough, you can probably easily recognize hucksters. If you've got questions you can't answer, get the opinion of a health professional you trust. Alan H. Marketing Research Types

Secondary research involves literature searches, article reviews and analysis of existing, available data. While secondary research is limited to the information you have on hand, it is usually much cheaper than primary research and can be conducted by small businesses themselves.
There are two general types of primary research: qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative research is used for developing new ideas or to get a "gut feeling" for a given subject or problem. Quantitative research primarily involves surveys based on representative samples, where data is collected using mail, telephone or personal interviews. Results from quantitative studies can be projected to entire populations and therefore used in predicting.
Qualitative Research
Nearly all qualitative research is done using focus groups. These groups consist of eight to ten carefully selected and recruited individuals who participate in a directed discussion concerning some issue. The specifications for recruiting these participants are based on the objectives of the study. For example, the owner of a gardening service who is interested in expanding into a new geographic territory might want to explore the demand for these services beforehand by conducting focus groups among homeowners living in the area where the expansion is planned.
The discussion itself is designed and led by a professional researcher called a focus group moderator. The moderator follows a specially prepared script known as a moderator's guide, which is developed with assistance from the client and outlines the issues to be covered. It is important that an independent, professional moderator be used to ensure objectivity, and that all the relevant issues are covered.
Focus groups are often conducted in special facilities that are equipped with one-way mirrors and observation rooms so the client can observe the discussions firsthand without disturbing the participants. The discussions are either audio or videotape recorded so the moderator does not have to take notes. After conducting the groups, the moderator will listen to the tapes, summarize the key points and present the client with a final report on the findings. In most cases, three focus groups are conducted for a single research project. It would be too risky to arrive at any conclusions based on the results of just a single group, since the chances of only one group being representative of the population are quite slim. While two groups are better than one, many times the findings from the second group vary greatly from those of the first. A third group strikes a balance between the first and second and allows the client a better perspective.
While focus groups are a legitimate form of marketing research, they are also the most misused and incorrectly applied of all existing techniques. They should only be used for exploration and generation of new ideas, and should never be considered as representative of the opinions of the entire population. The results from focus groups cannot be projected in any way. On the other hand, focus groups are an excellent method of flushing out key issues regarding a new idea or potential product or service. They can also serve as the first stage of the research process by identifying key points to be addressed in subsequent, quantitative surveys
